Jane Elliott Presents “The Anatomy of Prejudice” at WWCC
Creator of “Blue Eyes – Brown Eyes” Exercise to teach students about racism
Jane Elliott presents “The Anatomy of Prejudice” at Western Wyoming Community College, on March 7th, 2018, from 12:00PM to 1:00PM in room 3560A.B. and the Broadway Theater at 6:00PM.
Jane Elliott is a former third-grade schoolteacher, anti-racism activist and educator as well as feminist and LGBT activist. She is best known for her “Blue Eyes – Brown Eyes” exercise. She first conducted this exercise for her class the day after Rev. Martin Luther King was assassinated. Those who have been through this exercise have said it is an emotionally significant and life-changing experience. This ground-breaking exercise is the pinnacle of all other diversity programming in the country today.
The Anatomy of Prejudice is a presentation during which Jane Elliott discusses and explores the problems of racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia, ethnocentrism, and the responsibility shared by society to illuminate and eliminate them from ourselves and our environment.
“We are less civilized now than we were 500 years ago,” Elliott said. “We should be over this. I thought we would have reached the point where we all realize there’s only one race – the human race.”
Eliott said America was making positive strides regarding racism until recently. She believes the surge of white nationalist groups espousing separatist ideologies, anonymous hate speech through social media and the Internet, and politicians and citizens not speaking up when they see overt discrimination, is dividing the country.
The presentation is free and open to the public. The community is encouraged to attend. This event is sponsored by the WWCC Psychology Department, WWCC Education Department, WWCC Sociology and Social Work Department, WWCC History Department, WWCC Anthropology Department, WWCC Honors Program, BOCES, The Arlene and Louise Wesswick Foundation, 1st Year Success Colloquium, Hay Library and Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County.
