Western Wyoming Community College (Western), in partnership with its Exercise Science program and local sponsors, will host the 10th annual Run with Sandy – Together for a Cure 5K on Saturday, May 2. The event raises awareness of cancer and supports patients and families in the community, with all proceeds benefiting the Sweetwater Regional Cancer Center.
Open to runners, walkers, and supporters of all experience levels, the event invites participants to show up for a cause that touches every community. More than 2 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in the United States this year—nearly 5,500 each day, according to the American Cancer Society—making continued awareness, prevention, and early screening critical.
“Run with Sandy is about showing up for our community and supporting local patients and families navigating cancer,” said Kristine Clark, Western Exercise Science Professor. “Everyone who participates carries a reason—whether it’s honoring someone, supporting a loved one, or taking a step toward their own health—and that shared purpose is what makes this day so powerful.”
The event honors the legacy of Dr. Sandy Mitchell, who taught biology at Western for 28 years before passing away from breast cancer in 2017. Known for her deep connection with students, Dr. Mitchell’s impact continues through this event, which was originally created by students in her honor.
Participants may choose from several options, including a 5K run on the Gateway/Skyline loop, a 5K walk, or three laps around Western’s outdoor track. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. in the Western Commons and is by donation. Those who donate a minimum of $25 will receive a commemorative T-shirt while supplies last.
Walkers are encouraged to participate in the 8:30 a.m. start time, while runners will begin at 9:00 a.m. Participants can pre-register at westernwyoming.edu/runwithsandy to secure a spot and be entered into prize drawings. New this year, medals provided by Sweetwater Custom Works will be awarded to the top three finishers in the 5K run.
Community members who are unable to attend in person are encouraged to participate virtually by sharing photos using #RunWithSandy or to support the cause through a donation at westernwyoming.edu/donate.
Run With Sandy is made possible through the support of the Western Exercise Science Program, Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County, Western Wyoming Beverage, Aspen Mountain Plumbing, Sweetwater Custom Works, and Wellness Associates.
